Dimitris Bertsimas is currently the Vice Provost of Open Learning at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the Boeing Professor of Operations Research and the Associate Dean of Business Analytics at the Sloan School of Management, MIT. He has received a BS in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the National Technical University of Athens, Greece in 1985, a MS in Operations Research at MIT in 1987, and a Ph.D in Applied Mathematics and Operations Research at MIT in 1988. Since 1988, he has been with the MIT faculty. His research interests include machine learning and artificial intelligence, optimization and their applications in a variety of areas including health care and medicine, energy, financial services and transportation. He has co-authored more than 350 scientific papers and eight graduate level textbooks. He is a former editor in chief of INFORMS journal on optimization and former area editor of Management Science in Optimization and of Operations Research in Financial Engineering. He has supervised 103 doctoral students, and he is currently supervising 25 others. He has co-founded ten analytics companies over the years. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering since 2005, and he has received numerous research awards including the von Neumann theory prize for fundamental contributions in Operations Research and Management Science, the INFORMS president award for significant impact in society both in 2019, the Frederick W. Lanchester Prize of INFORMS for best publication in Operations Research in 2021 and the James R. Killian, Jr. Faculty Achievement Award, MIT in 2025, the highest award MIT bestows to one of its faculty.
